Hepatitis C Follow-up Protocol

In all cases of exposure:

  • source should have hepatitis C serology (antibodies to HCV) done
  • recipient should have baseline hepatitis C serology done
SOURCE RECIPIENT

If source hepatitis C negative

Consider HCV serology in 3 and 6 months

If source hepatitis C status unknown

Repeat hepatitis C serology +/- ALT in 3 and 6 months

If source hepatitis C positive or hepatitis C status unknown and high risk

Consider HCV qualitative RNA testing + ALT at 4-6 weeks by providing exposure history on the requisition, and repeat hepatitis C serology in 3 and 6 months

URGENT REFERRAL to Infectious Disease/GI specialist for further management of acute HCV if lab test result is positive

Offer counselling.
