Direct contact or droplet. Inanimate objects from patient room often harbor organisms.

 

Precautions Acute Care Long Term Care
Single Room Yes. Assess each situation individually.
Gloves Worn upon entry into care room and removed prior to exit. If in direct contact with colonized or infected body fluids/secretions. Perform hand hygiene at all times when entering or leaving patient room, including before and after glove use.
Gowns Worn upon entry into care room and removed prior to exit If in direct contact with colonized or infected body fluids/secretions.
Mask If nasal carrier or if in contact with respiratory secretions. If in contact with respiratory secretions from individual with pneumonia or tracheostomy.

Duration of Precautions

  • Consult Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) regarding precautions and screening.
  • Always consult IP&C prior to discontinuation of precautions.
