Globicatella spp

  • G. sanguinis
  • G. sulfidifaciens

  • Gram positive cocci in pairs and chains (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

These organisms are considered as commensals of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts.

 

They have been associated with bacteremia, meningitis (shunt/trauma related), and urinary tract infections.

 

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms are generally susceptible to penicillin, amoxicillin, tetracycline, and vancomycin. 

They are typically resistant to macrolides.

 

Clindamycin and cephalosporin resistance (including 3rd generation) is common.
