Strongyloides stercoralis
Acquired mostly in tropical and sub-tropical regions.
Serology may be more sensitive than stool for O & P testing.
Important to eradicate in patients where immune suppression is anticipated.
If initially positive, repeat stool cultures for 2 weeks after treatment to verify eradication.
Symptoms
- usually asymptomatic
- may cause diarrhea +/- eosinophilia
- ileus
- bacterial sepsis
- ARDS
