Paenibacillus spp

Gram Stain

  • Gram positive bacilli (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

These organisms are found widely in the environment and have been associated with meningitis, wound, and medical device related infections typically in immunocompromised patients, intravenous drug users, or secondary to penetrating trauma.

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms appear susceptible to vancomycin and linezolid with variable susceptibility to penicillins, cephalosporins, clindamycin, tetracyclines, and quinolones.

Daptomycin MICs are often elevated – possibly due to resistance in spores with reversion to susceptibility on germination.
