Early therapy is preferred over post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PEP may be considered for:

• exposures in closed institutional settings, e.g. long term care facilities
• selectively in family settings if individuals cannot be (reliably) protected by immunization, e.g. < 6 mos old, immunocompromised, or vaccine contraindicated.
