Tsukamurella spp

Gram Stain

  •  Gram positive bacilli irregular(aerobic)

Clinical Significance

Tsukamurella spp have been associated with chronic lung infections, bronchiectasis, meningitis, medical device related infections (including CAPD peritonitis), pulmonary, and skin/soft tissue infections, typically in immunocompromised patients.

Some species have also been associated with ophthalmic infections including keratitis and conjunctivitis.

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

There is not much information on the susceptibility pattern of these organisms. They appear susceptible to amikacin, ciprofloxacin, imipenem, minocycline, linezolid, and TMP/SMX.

They are resistant to penicillins, cephalosporins, and daptomycin.

Prolonged combination therapy is often required for successful clinical outcome.
