Folliculitis / Furunculosis

- Usually self-limiting.

- For large furuncles, recommend incision and drainage and C&S of pus, probing cavities to break up loculations, and covering with dry dressing.

- Systemic antibiotics (see Carbuncles) recommended if:

  • scalp folliculitis

  • fever

  • significant surrounding cellulitis

  • tachycardia.

- Unresolving furunculosis - consider mycobacterial infections.

Mupirocin 2% tid topically until resolved (max 7 days)
