Moderate:  local infection as defined under Mild in a patient with no systemic signs (as described under Severe) but which has ≥ one of the following characteristics: cellulitis/erythema extending >2cm, lymphangitic streaking, spread beneath the superficial fascia, deep tissue abscess, gangrene, involvement of muscle, tendon, joint or bone.

Severe: local infection as defined under Mild in a patient with systemic toxicity as manifested by ≥ two of the following:

  • temperature >38.3ºC or <36ºC
  • heart rate >90 beats/min
  • respiratory rate >20 breaths/min or PaCO2 <32 mm Hg
  • WBC>12x109/L or <4 x109/L or 10% immature forms

Surgical debridement and drainage of associated soft tissue abscesses recommended.

Regimens do not cover P. aeruginosa.
